Roscoe “Coach K” Kahumoku of Enterprise, Alabama, passed away Monday February 5, 2024 at Flowers Hospital. He was 73 years young.
A pā'ina will be held at a later time with family and friends coming together to celebrate his life. Interment will be at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu Hawaii.
Roscoe was born in Honolulu, Hawaii.
As a man of strong faith, he was married to his loving wife Gayle for 44 years. He was a man with many hobbies and had songs that came from deep in his heart. His gift for music was shared with many people including the residences of Enterprise Health and Rehabilitation for fourteen years; where he was affectionately called “the guitar man.” He was a voracious reader and loved Louis L’Amour as well as Stuart Woods. He also loved sports and earned the nickname “Coach K,” but what he really loved was seeing athletes grow and becoming the best they could be. He was the Coach of the Year in 2009, coached two state championship teams, and three national championship teams including a 42-0 and a 49-0 seasons. He influenced generations of players in Alabama, Texas, California, and other places. He would make sure that his players understood that having fun was the most important part and that winning would come. He often told his players, “play your best and give God the rest!” He often travel to see players he had coached as they continued their careers in college and even professional ranks. Never meeting a stranger, Roscoe collected friends almost daily, adding them to his buckets of friends.
Many people that he loved preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Gayle and her large family; daughters Jessica, Lily (Bogdan), Emily (Curtis), Kelly (William); his brother Michael and many grandchildren that he dearly loved. As a man of faith who shared it, Roscoe would say, “God is good all the time! And all the time God is good! Amen? Love you. Love, me. ALOHA!”
Flowers are welcome; the family ask that you have the flowers delivered to Enterprise Health and Rehabilitation.
