Virgil David Strickland, age 83, of Enterprise, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, July 10, 2025, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Cliff Quincy and Brother Levi Key officiating. Burial will follow at New Home Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory directing. The family we receive friends from 12:30 PM. to 2 PM, prior to the service.
Born on November 5, 1941, to JP and Mittie Strickland, both of whom preceded him in death, Virgil was raised with a strong appreciation for hard work and family. From the time he began his painting career at age 14, he poured his life into his craft, working diligently and skillfully until the age of 80. His attention to detail and pride in his work made him well-respected in his field.
Beyond his profession, Virgil was a devoted father, grandfather, friend, and mentor. He loved working with racking horses and spent many years training and showing them. He was a dazzling dancer but perhaps even more, he enjoyed coaching the sport he loved, softball. Many in the community remember his leadership on and off the field. Virgil was also a member of New Home Baptist Church, and he had a deep love for the Lord.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Brenda Louise Strickland; his daughter, Tammy Key; son, David Strickland; and his sister, Jean Bowman.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Tracy Johnson (Greg), and his son, Danny Strickland. He also leaves behind a son-in-law, Stanley Key; his grandchildren: Lee Strickland, Britt Strickland (Katie), KayKay Strickland (Alexys), Ryan Johnson, Taylor Wright (Winston), Justin Strickland (Tempest), Josh Strickland, Kaila Strickland, Cammy Key, Levi Key, Channing McCrummen, Heather Leitch, Kayla Cammarota; as well as great-grandchildren: Brayden Jackson, Brandon Strickland (Christine), Austin Strickland, Alexis Strickland, Braxton Strickland, Kenzley Strickland, Lakelynn Strickland, and one great-great-grandchild Aspyn and one more on the way.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Christian Mission at 307 North Main St, Enterprise, AL 36330 or to the cemetery fund at New Home Baptist Church in Virgil’s memory. His legacy of faith, hard work, and love for family and community will not be forgotten.
