Robert “Bob” J. Gilbert, age 81, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, adventure, and deep love for family and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Gilbert residence on Friday, April 3, 2026, at 5:00 PM.
Bob was born on September 1, 1944, in Brisbane, Australia, to the late John Gilbert and Mavis White. From an early age, he was inspired to serve his country, a calling that would shape the course of his life. Bob proudly served in the United States Army, where he became an Army aviator. Highly decorated for his service Bob received the National Defense Service Medal, Master Army Aviator Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Silver Star, the Bronze Star, (46) Air Metals, two Distinguished Flying Crosses one with valor, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Overseas Service Ribbons. His distinguished military career spanned many years, and he ultimately retired with honor, having dedicated himself fully to his nation.
Aviation was not just Bob’s profession, it was his passion. He found joy in the skies and carried that same enthusiasm into his everyday life. Bob truly loved life in all its forms, from lively celebrations with family and friends to peaceful, quiet moments spent with his beloved dogs.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Pennie Gilbert, who stood faithfully by his side through every chapter of life.
Bob’s life was marked by service, friendship, and a genuine appreciation for the moments that matter most. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express sympathy are encouraged to make memorial contributions to Southern Dog Mission, a 501C3, at 300 Wimbledon Drive Enterprise, Alabama 36330, a cause close to Bob’s heart.
