Robert John Gilbert

Robert “Bob” J. Gilbert, age 81, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service to his country, adventure, and deep love for family, friends and animals.

A celebration of life service will be held at the Gilbert residence on Friday, April 3, 2026, at 5:00 PM.

Bob was born on September 1, 1944, in Brisbane, Australia, to the late John Gilbert and Mavis White. From an early age, he was inspired to serve his country. Bob briefly served in the United States Air Force then transferred to the US Army, and was selected to attend Warrant Officer school. Bob completed Army Aviation school and was selected to fly UH-1C helicopter Gunships. Soon he took an officers direct commission. Bob was an Instructor pilot, Master Army Aviator who received the Silver Star for Gallantry in Viet Nam, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, 46 Air Medals, a Meritorious service medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Overseas Service Ribbons. His distinguished military career ended as he retired with honors.

Aviation was also, his second career. Bob instructed new Army officers in pilotage as a civilian army flight instructor. Bob truly loved life. Whether a lively celebration, or peaceful quiet moments spent with his wife and beloved dogs.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Pennie Gilbert of 42 years, who stood faithfully by him.

Bob’s life was marked by selfless service to country. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express sympathy are encouraged to make memorial contributions to Southern Dog Mission, a 501C3, at 300 Wimbledon Drive Enterprise, Alabama 36330, a cause close to his heart.
