Mary Gunitta Calhoun Thames (Nanny), of New Brockton, Alabama, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, at the age of 88.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory with Reverend Mike Medley officiating. Burial will follow Asbury Methodist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Enterprise directing. The family will receive friends on Wednesday beginning at 1:00 pm until service time.
Born on April 21, 1937, to Tom and Mattie Calhoun, Mary lived a life defined by love, sacrifice, and quiet strength. She was a simple woman in the most beautiful sense—never asking for much. She gave deeply to those she loved and never hesitated to step in and help when it mattered most.
Mary worked hard from a young age and carried that work ethic throughout her entire life. She was a caregiver in every sense of the word, raising not only her own children but generations of family. She raised her daughters, helped raise her grandchildren, and even played a part in raising her great-grandchildren. To many, she was more than a mother or grandmother—she was a steady source of love, guidance, and comfort.
She is survived by her three daughters, Patty Sasser (John), Kathy Pittman, and Paula Catrett. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Ron, Sonya, Kevin, Kenny Paul, Brandon, Atlas, and Christopher; and sisters and brothers, Virginia, Jean, Jerry, Judy, Rodger, Kay, Tommy.
There were many great grandchildren, all of which she loved, Jocelyn, Katelyn, Caroline, Lexi, Pompy, Mary Beth, Amy, Addie, Jaleigh, Braedon, Hadley, Jenna, and Adon, Nathaniel, Austin, Jayden, and Danlei. Also, there was a special bond she held close to her heart, a deep and lasting love with her great-grandson, Shady Pittman, who brought her immense joy and held a unique and treasured place in her heart.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Huey Thames; and her sister, Jewel McIntosh. Her legacy is one of selflessness, strength, and unconditional love. The lives she touched and the family she helped raise will carry her memory forward for generations to come.
