Luciano Francis "Woody" Panetta

Luciano Francis “Woody” Panetta, 73, of Enterprise, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

Born on September 1, 1952, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Woody was the son of the late Joseph Panetta and Theresa Bombaca Panetta. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Panetta.

Woody proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, including an overseas assignment in Italy. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. The discipline, humility, and dedication he displayed in the military remained evident throughout his life.

Following his military service, Woody built a career as a concrete mason and was a proud member of the labor union. He believed in honest work and continued working for as long as he was physically able.

More than anything, Woody loved people. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. If you visited his home, chances are you weren’t leaving without something to eat. Whether cooking for family gatherings, feeding friends, welcoming guests, or hosting his men’s group, Woody found genuine joy in sharing a meal with others. To him, food was more than nourishment, it was an expression of love, friendship, and hospitality.

Woody also loved to dance, treasured time spent with family and friends, and was deeply devoted to his church family. He greeted life with a smile, worked hard, laughed often, and lived with a servant’s heart. His kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone blessed to know him.

He is survived by his devoted wife of thirteen years, Janice Panetta of Enterprise; his son, Joseph Merritt (Michelle) of Washington; his brother, Armando Panetta of New Jersey; and his beloved grandchildren, Morgan Merritt and Harley Merritt. He also leaves behind many treasured friends whose lives were made richer by his friendship.

A memorial service celebrating Woody’s life will be held in October 2026, at Highpoint Church. Interment with United States Army Military Honors will follow at Alabama National Cemetery.

Woody measured a rich life not by what he accumulated, but by the people gathered around his table. His door was always open, his smile was always welcoming, and there was always room for one more. His legacy of generosity, friendship, unwavering faith, and heartfelt hospitality will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
