John D. “Pete” Helms, age 80, of Enterprise, passed away September 15, 2025 surrounded by family. He was born on November 29, 1944, in Crestview, Florida, to the late Davis W. and Allene Helms.
Pete was truly a Renaissance man. He was an musician at heart and shared his musical gifts as a trumpet player in the inaugural Sound of the South Marching Band under the direction of Dr. John Long at Troy University and with Bama Jam as an original member. His love of music led him to a career as a Band Director, where he inspired countless young people. Following his years in education, Pete pursued his mechanical talents with a second career as a business owner, using his skills at Southern Exhaust &Tire. He eventually retired from Fort Rucker as a Aircraft Mechanic.
Beyond his work, Pete loved the outdoors and found joy in hunting and fishing. Above all, he loved his family deeply and faithfully.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Matt Helms, and two brothers, Thomas Helms and Lavon Helms.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Susan Bush Helms; his children, Heather Lucas (Shawn), John Helms (Diane), and Peter Helms; four grandchildren, James Helms (Samantha), Ashlynn Helms, Alex Helms, and Owen Lucas; as well as extended family and friends who will cherish his memory.
Memorialization will be by cremation with no service at Pete’s request. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to V.O.C.A.L. (Victims of Crime and Leniency) at P.O. Box 4449 Montgomery, AL 36103-4449
