Edwina “Lou” Stewart Vaughn , 89, of Enterprise, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at her son Robert Vaughn’s home in Peachtree City, Georgia, surrounded by all three of her beloved sons.
Born in Brookline, Missouri, on July 2, 1935, to Hubert and Lucy Stewart, Lou graduated from nursing school in Springfield, Missouri, in 1956. She began her career with the Red Cross blood mobile. It was at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, where she met Russell Vaughn, an Army officer, while she was working and he was stationed there. They married on August 4, 1957.
Together, Lou and Russ embarked on a life of adventure, traveling the world for Russ’s work. Known for her adaptability and enthusiasm, Lou would quickly pack up her family’s belongings and prepare for their next destination—whether it was Germany, Ethiopia, Oklahoma, Alabama, or Arkansas. They finally settled in Enterprise, Alabama, in 1975, putting down roots in the community they came to cherish. After many years of service, Lou retired from the State of Alabama as the head nurse of the state's tuberculosis program in 1998.
Lou enjoyed various activities throughout her life. She was an avid card player who appreciated spending time with friends over a game. Lou also liked visiting Panama City Beach and had a keen interest in traveling, often exploring new places with friends and family.
Lou is preceded in death by her husband, Russ Vaughn; her mother, Lucy Stewart; her father, Hubert Stewart; her brothers, Keet and Jimmy Stewart; and her sister, Nell McElhaney.
She is survived by her sons, Russell (Sondra) of Crawfordville, FL; Richard of Tallahassee, FL; and Robert (Michelle) of Peachtree City, GA; her grandchildren, Derek of Greenville, SC; Tara of Seattle, WA; Jonathan (Kaia) of Simpsonville, SC; and Taylor of Stavanger, Norway; and her great-grandchild, Asher (Jonathan and Kaia). Additional surviving family includes bonus grandchildren Jared Joyner (Kathryn) of Tallahassee, FL, and Jesslyn Hosford (Austin); great-grandchildren Grady, Ellie, Blakely, and Barrett; and her brother-in-law Charles Vaughn (Jane) of Huntsville, AL, along with numerous nephews and nieces.
A celebration of Lou’s life will be held August 3, 2024, at College Avenue Church of Christ in Enterprise, Alabama, where she had been a devoted member for nearly 50 years. The family invites friends to join them for visitation from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with the celebration immediately following at 12:00 PM in the sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Camp Wiregrass, PO Box 311072, Enterprise, Alabama, 36331 in her name.
Lou will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
