Cw2 (Ret.) Jessie Melvin Windham

CW2 (Ret.) Jessie Melvin Windham of Chancellor, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Flowers Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory in Enterprise with Mike Tindol officiating. Burial will follow in El Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Enterprise directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday prior to the service beginning at 10:00 am and continuing until service time.

Jessie was born November 18, 1932, in Daleville, Alabama, to the late Hilliard and Hilda Speigner Windham. Having joined the military at age 17, Jessie grew up quickly and went on to serve 23 years in the U.S. Army before retiring in 1972. He was a highly decorated intelligence office, and he served in the Korean Conflict as well as two tours in the Vietnam Conflict. Much of his career was spent overseas as he proudly served the country he loved. In his free time he was never happier than in the woods hunting or fishing, or working in his woodshop. Most of all, he dearly loved his wife of 72 years, Pat Windham, before her passing in 2024. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his sister, Grazia Smith; son-in-law, Vernon R. Beatty, and nephew, Robert W. Smith.

Survivors include his children, Diane Beatty, Debra Morgan, David Windham (Mary), and Doug Windham; ten grandchildren, Anna Elmore (Brandon), Darrell Zinn (Dawn), Kathrine Sutley (Lance), Christopher Beatty, Jeffrey Beatty (Melissa), Elizabeth Beatty (Coen), Katelyn Moore, James Windham (Deanna), Wes Windham (Kelsey), and Jesse Windham; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren.
