Cw2 (Ret.) Calvin Floyd Garwood

CW2 (Ret.) Calvin Floyd Garwood, beloved husband and dedicated serviceman, passed away on March 10, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on July 2, 1935, in LaPorte, Indiana, Calvin was the cherished son of the late Kenneth H. and Ethel M. Garwood. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons, Gary Garwood and Sonny Barnes; brothers, Kenneth Garwood and Dale Lee Garwood; sisters, Evelyn Harvard and Beverly Sult; and great-grandson, Zane Garwood.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2025, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory in Enterprise at 11:00 a.m. with Father Zachary Greenwell officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Meadowlawn Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made in his honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org/donate.

Calvin honorably served his country, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW2) after a distinguished military career that included 13 years of service in the Air Force and 25 years in the Army Reserves where he traveled all over the U.S. and Europe teaching various units as an CH-47 instructor. His commitment to service and leadership left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

After retiring from his military career, Mr. Garwood obtained a culinary arts degree from Treholm State in Montgomery, Alabama, as well a real estate license. He was a long haul truck driver for a short period of time, and he participated in a saw-sharpening course in Missouri. Mr. Garwood was a proud lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Ona Blaze Garwood, who stood by his side through the years, sharing in the joys and challenges of life together. He is also survived by his children, Bruce Garwood (Becky) and Beth Gautier of Indiana, Jennifer Blake (Scott) of Texas, Diane Welling of Alabama, Eddie Barnes of Florida,; grandchildren, Scotty Blake (MJ), Katherine Welling, Jessica Welling, Christopher Garwood, Carla Barnes, Heather Ligda (James), Sarah Palm (Erik), Jay K. Gautier, and Tiffani Martin; great-grandchildren, Freya Rose Tyler, Inanna Morton, Benjamin Garwood, Claire Garwood (Emery), Addison Hendrixson, Avery Hendrixson, Hunter Ligda, Hudson Ligda, Huxley Ligda, Kaytlyn Burton, Wyatt Schoff, Zachary Barnes, Will Barnes, and Jimmy Peoples; great-great grandchildren, Maverick Hunter, Adam Burton, and Anthony Barnes; and siblings, Yvonne brown, Sandy Mooney (William), and Warren Garwood (Marie). Calvin’s legacy of kindness and dedication will be remembered by family and friends alike.

Calvin will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his warmth, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his family and country.
