Betty Aiko Gavigan (Manabe) Schultz

Betty Aiko Manabe Gavigan Schultz, 94, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2024, at her home in Whitehall Assisted Living, Dothan, AL.

Born on March 28, 1930, in a small village in Japan, Betty was the beloved daughter of Maki and Sadagiro Manabe. In 1953, Betty married William "Bill" Gavigan, an American soldier stationed in post-WWII Japan. After moving to the United States with Bill, Betty proudly became a U.S. citizen. They were blessed with a daughter, Teriko Gavigan, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 21 due to complications from rheumatic fever. Throughout her life, Betty embraced every opportunity with grace and strength. She took great pride in her career as a professional Japanese dancer, performing for high-ranking military officers. Betty and Bill settled in Daleville, AL, where they both took civilian jobs at Fort Rucker. Betty retired after 30 years of civil service.

A chance visit from a pastor's wife led Betty and Bill to become devoted followers of Jesus, and they remained faithful in their walk with Christ for the rest of their lives. After Bill's passing in 1989, Betty married their close friend Bill Schultz in 2002, and she lovingly cared for him until his death in 2010. Betty was known for her kindness, generosity, and vibrant spirit. Wonderfully funny and quick-witted, she brought joy to everyone around her. She was also a talented artist, who loved sewing, knitting, crocheting, and oil painting. Betty's gracefulness and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

As we remember her, we take comfort in knowing she is now at peace, reunited with her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents: Sadagiro and Maki Manabe, her husbands: William Gavigan and William Schultz and her daughter: Teriko Gavigan.

Betty is survived by: Adoptive Grandson Bradley Rushing and Granddaughter Amanda Guettler.

A memorial graveside service will be held on 9th of September 2024 at 10AM at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favorite charity in Betty Aiko Manabe Gavigan name.
