Angela E. (Golden) Hughes

Angela G. Hughes, age 72, of New Brockton, transitioned from this world to her eternal home on Saturday, February 11, after several years of treatment for cancer.

Friends are welcome to visit the family at Calvary Baptist Church, 1837 SR-51 Enterprise, AL, on Monday, 13 February, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm.  The funeral service will be held at Calvary at 2:00 pm followed by interment on the grounds.

In recent weeks, Angela and her family and friends had expected her passing to come soon.  Countless friends and family members visited to share memories, prayers, joys, and love.

Angela was preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Howard Golden.  She is survived by her mother, Johnnie Golden; husband, J. Mike Hughes; siblings and siblings-in-law, Steve and Gale Golden and Rocky and Amelia Barnes; sons- and daughters-in-law, Heath and Lacey Hughes and Justin and Allison Hughes; grandchildren Ava Greer and Layla Westyn Hughes and Timothy, Joseph, Amelia, and John Garrett Hughes; nieces, Jessie Golden and Genny Golden, Garrett and Austyn Barnes, Laura Hughes, and nephew Clay Hughes.

Angela was born in Louisville, KY, in 1950, to Howard and Johnnie Golden.  She was raised in several towns in central Alabama with younger siblings Steve and Amelia before graduating from Calera High School in 1969.  She studied home economics at Samford University, graduating in 1973, before entering a long and distinguished career with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System as a county 4-H agent.  She led 4-H programs in Russell and Geneva Counties before settling in Coffee County in 1978 where she touched the lives of countless young people and their families before retiring from the Extension System in 2004.  In 2008, she was named to the Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame.  In her second career, Angela taught GED courses at Enterprise State Junior College before retiring to a life of family, grandchildren, travel, and service.

Angela married Joe Michael Hughes of Geneva, AL, at Calera Baptist Church in Calera, AL, in September 1975.  Mike and Angela welcomed their firstborn Heath Michael Hughes in March of 1979 and their second Justin Lee Hughes in June of 1981.  They raised their family on land outside New Brockton.  Over the years, the family attended Lee Street Baptist Church, Park Avenue Baptist Church, Bethany Baptist Church, and Calvary Baptist Church.  Angela served as a pianist or organist in every church she attended from high school until her passing.  She also sang in the choir, and taught children, adult, and senior adult classes.  She was known to all as a faithful Christian and a reliable friend.

An annual highlight in later years was “Nana Camp” held every summer for her six grandchildren and a handful of local “grandchildren” who joined in. Mike and Angela enjoyed travel with dear friends later in life.

Anyone who knew Angela for more than five minutes recalled her joyfully whistling hymns from the other room.  The last few weeks, though, she was not able to whistle her beloved hymns anymore.  Perhaps she’s whistling again today, “When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there!”
